music hal performance, as substitude for his sick mother, Hannah.
By this time, his father, Charles Sr. had left home.

1896: his mother, his brother,
Sydney and himself, enter Lambeth Workhouse (for the poor). After
a few weeks, the boys went to Hanwell School for Ophans and Destitude
Children.

Their mother
suffered mental breakdown, and lived with Charles Sr. and his mistress
for the time being.

13, 1901: Charles
Sr. dies.
- 1901:
Hannah enters Cane Hill Asylum.
- 1907:
He
begins performing for Karno Troupe, joining his brother, Sydney,
who was largely responsible for Charles placement.
- May
1913: Accepts an offer from
Mark Sennett's Keystone Comedy Company and made thirty-five films.
- Nov.
1914: Signs a contract with
Essanay Films and made fourteen films next year, and a fifteenth
one in 1918, Triple Trouble.
- Feb.
1916: Signs a contract with
Mutual Films, and made tweleve celebrated short subjects in 1916
and 1917.
- 1916:
Leaves Essanay, it formed The Essanay -Chaplin Revenue. It
was the first Chaplin film anthologies. Many Chaplin cavalcades
have since appeared.

7, 1917:
Signs
contract with First National, for which he made eight films.
- Oct.
23, 1918: He
married Mildred Harris.
- 1919:
With
Doughles Fairbanks, D.W. Griffith, and Mary Pickford founds United
Artists. But was not free of his First National contract until 1923.
- Nov.
1920:
Divorced by Mildred Harris.
- 1921:
He provides his mother with a private nursing home.
- Mar.
1924:
He marries Lita Grey.
- Aug.
22, 1927:
Divorced
by Lita Grey.

28, 1929:
Hannah Chaplin dies.
- May
16, 1929:
He was honoured with a special Oscar "for versatility and genius
in writing, acting, directing and producing The Circus."

He secretly marries Paulette Goddard.

16 1936: He was awarded
outstanding actor honors by the Screenwriters and Actors Guild.

30, 1940: He was voted as
the best actor of the year award by The New York Films Critics.

Divorced by Paulette Goddard.

Oona O'Neill.

Sydney Chaplin, his brother dies.
- 1965:
His
oldest child by Oona, Geraldine, becomes a film star, in the release
of Doctor Zhivago.

a special honorary Oscar "for the incalculable effect he has
had in making motion pictures the art of this century."

3, 1972:
He
was awarded Golden Lion statuette by The Venice Film Festival.

27, 1973: He won an Oscar
for best Best Original Dramatic Score for 1972, Limelight.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

After editing
the film in hiding, he was finally able to deliver The Kid to representatives
of First National. Alf Reeves, third from left looks unnerved by
the large cheque he is holding; Charlie, and far right, Sydney Chaplin
seemed altogether happier. |
